Welcome

Becoming someone you can trust.

Becoming someone you can trust.Becoming someone you can trust.Becoming someone you can trust.

The Work in Between helps you stop breaking trust with yourself in the moments that matter.

About The Work In Between

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

Say what you mean. Make the decision. Follow through.

TRUST ISN'T BUILT BY KNOWING MORE

You already know what needs to happen.

The conversation. The boundary. The decision you keep circling.

You know - and you still don't act.

Do that enough times and something quietly breaks.

Not your confidence.

Not your intelligence.

Your trust in yourself to follow through on what you already know is true.

That's the erosion. It doesn't happen in one big failure. It happens in the small, ordinary moments where you knew and still didn't do it..

This isn't a confidence problem. It isn't a motivation problem. It's what happens in the space between knowing and doing- the space where trust is either built or broken.

That space has a name.

THE WORK IN BETWEEN

"Knowing it and acting on it are two completely different skills - and nobody teaches the second one."

- Gretchen

The Work in Between

I call it The Work in Between because it’s not some gap you explain away with a TED Talk and a deep breath.

It’s work.

Messy, unglamorous, follow-through work.

It’s the part where you catch yourself before the old pattern takes over.

Before you soften the truth.
Before you make the excuse.
Before you wait for permission.
Before you turn one hard thing into six months of “I’m working on it.”

This is where avoidance gets interrupted.

Where shame stops running the meeting.

Where the old pattern stops making the decision for you.

I’ve spent decades earning letters after my name and sharing rooms with smart, capable people who know what to do, know what needs to change, and stall out right at the moment it matters.

I’ve seen it in healthcare.
 I’ve seen it in leadership.
I’ve seen it in women who are brilliant, exhausted, self-aware, and still waiting for permission they don’t actually need.

And I’ve lived it myself - getting flattened by life, scraping myself off the floor, and learning the deeply annoying truth that knowing better does not magically make you do better.

That’s The Work in Between.

Not more knowing.

The part where you actually become different.

About The Work in Between

Meet Gretchen

Gretchen Norling-Holmes, PhD is not here to whisper affirmations into the void and call it transformation.

She is a three-time cancer survivor, health communication PhD, former stand-up comedian, author, podcast host, and professional pattern-spotter with a very low tolerance for pretending we don’t know what’s going on.

Her work lives at the intersection of lived experience, research, communication, and the deeply inconvenient truth that knowing better does not magically make you do better.

She brings the evidence.
 She brings the stories.
She brings the “let’s stop lying to ourselves now” energy.

And somehow, she makes it feel like both a call-out and a hand on your back.

Social proof

Award-Winning Author

The Work in Between received the Literary Titan Gold Book Award for its honest, emotionally powerful approach to healing, resilience, and self-reinvention.

Reader-Recognized Voice

Readers describe Gretchen’s work as candid, courageous, approachable, and deeply human - the kind of writing that feels less like a lecture and more like someone finally saying the thing out loud.

Credibility With Teeth

Gretchen brings a rare mix of lived experience, health communication expertise, research-backed insight, and real-world pattern recognition.

Not Just Inspiration

This work does not turn healing into a tidy little bow. It names fear, shame, illness, loss, accountability, and the deeply inconvenient work of actually changing.
